I encountered the amazing leaf-cutter ants on a trip to Costa Rica. This Advent calendar takes a closer look at their world, layer by layer and leaf by leaf. I watched them carry the leaf matter back to their nests where they chew it up to make compost, out of which they grow mushrooms. It wouldn’t be an Advent calendar if they didn‘t grow and decorate one big mushroom to cele- brate Christmas.
